FAQs

Is Carmiq only for Tesla Owners?

No. Currently, only Tesla owners can connect their cars. However, more and more companies are rolling out “connected cars”, and Carmiq will support these as well. However, even if you don’t own a compatible car, you can still sign up and participate by renting vehicles or offering services.

No! There is no obligation to share your vehicle with others when you connect to Carmiq. Carmiq plans to release a robust feature set that enhances many components of owning the car, but everything is optional. For example, you may just want to have your vehicle’s activity history being recorded for you, but don’t want to leverage Carmiq’s insurance, tire, parking, or sharing features, and that’s perfectly fine. However, if you are curious about how much revenue your car could generate on either Carmiq or the Tesla network, we will be able to look at your individual vehicle and provide you with estimations.

The standard Tesla app is great for viewing basic real-time information and issuing commands, such as seeing your current state of charge, adjusting your charge limit, and unlocking your car. However, we believe that the opportunities that emerge from the connectivity of your Tesla extend far beyond these basic features. Carmiq’s goal is to leverage this connectivity to simplify the entire ownership experience, starting from when you order the car and are in the process of securing financing/insurance, to when your tires need to be rotated or change, to when you are out of town and want to make money with your car. You will also be able to do everything you can on the Tesla app through Carmiq, so you won’t have to switch back and forth.

Carmiq will only inform you of service opportunities if they are beneficial to you and you have explicitly stated your interest. For example, we will only let insurance companies contact you if they are able to provide you with a better rate than what you are currently paying. Every Tesla owner is different and has a different set of challenges. We understand that not every service or feature will be valuable to everybody.

We’ve released a background feature on Carmiq that stops any data collection on our end when the vehicle is stationary. You can read about what we did or watch a video here.

Third-party apps have historically been known to result in drain on the battery because they query the vehicle with a frequency that delays or prevents the vehicle from entering the “sleep” state. This happens because a query of the data when the car is awake will result in a reset of the sleep countdown timer. However, once the car enters this sleep mode, querying the data does not wake it up again. At Carmiq, we are continually optimizing to prevent disturbing the vehicle’s natural cycle. We want to identify phantom drain, not cause it.

Tesloop is never able to view or share your account credentials. When you enter your credentials in the Carmiq sign-up portal, they are verified by Tesla, who then grants us a “token” to access the data-stream from your car. This process known as OAuth is the same as when you use your Facebook account to sign up for an app or service. The actual service never has access to your Facebook credentials. Additionally, if your Tesla account password is modified, we lose access to the Token.

Tesloop is the first Tesla-based mobility service for consumers. Tesloop has been offering city-to-city shared-car transportation and rentals in Teslas, and has received the highest consumer ratings of any transportation system. Tesloop currently manages an expanding fleet of Model X, Model S, and Model 3 vehicles in Southern California which are connected to Tesloop’s data management system. Tesloop leverages the low cost of electric vehicles along with the optimizations enabled by continuous vehicle data feeds. Tesloop focuses on an amazing travel experience, whether you are being driven or driving yourself. We believe traveling in a safe, productive, and sustainable way should be an experience that’s truly inspiring from booking to driving.
